A woman from Sheffield says the cost of sports bras is preventing girls from getting into sports. Rosie Halsall can tell us more. Good morning, Rosie.
Good morning.
Thank you so much for being here. Just tell us a little bit about the situation with girls playing sport and why this is a barrier for them.
So sports bras, if you're not aware, can be quite costly. And that's not even including their fittings, which is another additional cost. And I believe that this is another barrier to girls getting into sport, among many. And I think that providing sports bras in secondary schools and their fittings could be so incredibly life-changing for not only girls, so they have equal opportunity, no matter their economic background, also making sure that girls' participation in sport and staying fit is at the same level of boys. And then furthermore, it's just this idea of staying fit and healthy in your adolescence is so important for your health as you age. And often diseases like osteoporosis, they hit older women much harder. And they hit older men, not only from menopause, but also this idea that if you're less active in your youth, your health is going to take it when you're older.
Thank you for explaining that. And I think it's mind-blowing, really, to think that something as simple, really, as a sports bra is, you know, holding some people back. Yeah, it's really sad to see that we're not talking about them as like essential pieces of kit.
Yeah, I can't imagine not doing sport. As someone who's done it a lot, like I played for Team GB for Junior Roller Derby, you know, it's something that I have to wear whenever I do sport and it costs me quite a bit.
...
Who are you in touch with to try and make this happen? This dream you're talking about?
So Politika, which is the youth wing of a think tank called Radix, is they've been amazing in kind of making sure my voices get heard. And they're who I originally...How I started talking about this is I won their policy competition for positive change. And then that went on to the Rest is Politics podcast. And got spoken about by Roy Stewart and Alistair Campbell, which I think was... Wow! Greatest moment of my life, basically.
So far. So far, Rosie.
And just been talking with people like Radio Sheffield has been great. And I'm hoping to get this further with my local MP. But I'm hoping to get it as far as possible with how people hear it. And if it became an actual policy and it gets financial backing, that would be incredible.
